Wellingborough Submits Expression of Interest for UK Town of Culture 2028

Wellingborough Town Council is proud to announce that it has formally submitted its Expression of Interest to become the UK’s inaugural Town of Culture 2028.

The UK Town of Culture competition, launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, is a landmark national initiative designed to strengthen pride, identity and a sense of place, while building social cohesion within local communities. It aims to celebrate the unique stories of towns across the country and give them the opportunity to showcase their cultural strengths on a national stage.

The competition is expected to attract significant national interest, with around 3,000 towns across the UK anticipated to submit bids. Towns will be assessed by an expert panel, with the strongest submissions progressing through to a shortlist. Three finalists – representing different town sizes – will ultimately be selected, with the overall winner receiving £3 million to deliver an ambitious cultural programme in 2028. Two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to support elements of their cultural plans.

Councillor Paul Bell, speaking on behalf of Wellingborough Town Council, said:
“Wellingborough has a wealth of history, creativity and community spirit. From our rich heritage to our vibrant local arts and cultural organisations, this bid is an opportunity to celebrate who we are and to share our story with the rest of the country.”

The Town of Culture initiative has been inspired by the success of the UK City of Culture programme, which has demonstrated the transformative impact that culture can have on local economies, tourism and civic pride. The new competition seeks to ensure that towns—often overlooked—are given the same opportunity to shine and to be recognised for their contribution to the national story.

Wellingborough’s Expression of Interest highlights the town’s deep historical roots, diverse communities and growing cultural offer. It sets out an ambitious vision to bring people together through arts, heritage and community-led activity, ensuring that culture is accessible to all residents.
“This is about putting Wellingborough on the map. We are incredibly proud of our town and believe we have a compelling story to tell—one that reflects both our heritage and our future ambitions.”

Should Wellingborough be shortlisted, the Council will work closely with local partners, community groups and residents to develop a full and inclusive bid that reflects the voices and aspirations of the whole town.

Regardless of the outcome, Wellingborough Town Council remains committed to investing in culture as a means of strengthening community ties, supporting local talent and driving long-term regeneration.
